HALMART

An illustrator's world, translated into a working store.

Hallie Bateman · 2022 · Design / Shopify build

Hallie is an illustrator and author who needed a shop for her prints, pins, stickers, and art objects. We started from scratch: I collected her vision, wireframed the mockups, and we worked through the color palette together. She drew her own typeface; I turned it into a web font and built the whole identity around it.

Every page was custom designed in Figma first, then built in Shopify’s template language. The hurdle was making the designs render faithfully inside the template editor without breaking any native Shopify functionality, so most of the build time went to exactly that. In the end we shipped a store that looked hand-drawn and barely needed me after launch.

The shop ran for about a year, and she sold work the whole time. She eventually closed it to focus on illustration and her books, which is the right reason to close a shop. It was a months-long project we both worked on part time, and the kind of client work I’d do again: a genuinely creative person, a real vision, and a final build she could run with little help from me.
